Start With Days, Not Towns
Route length decides everything else. Choose the number of nights first, then the places.
- 6 days: Dali and Lijiang only. One lake, one mountain, one craft day. The least tiring shape for a first trip with young children.
- 8 days, classic: Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. The standard triangle, with room for a slow Erhai day.
- 8 days, highland: Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La. More road, more altitude, fewer town comforts.
- 10 to 14 days: adds monasteries, Meili or Lugu Lake. Only worth it if your children already travel well.
Do not press the classic triangle and the highland line into one short trip. Tell one story.
Altitude Is the Real Constraint
Lijiang sits around 2,400 m and the highland route climbs higher than that. Children usually adjust, but not on an adult schedule.
- Sleep one night at the lower elevation before any long ascent.
- Keep the first highland morning short; no gorge walk on arrival day.
- Watch for headaches, broken sleep and lost appetite, and tell your guide early rather than pushing through.
A private vehicle matters here because a coach cannot wait for one child who needs a slower morning. That is the whole argument for a private Yunnan tour.
Keep Two Days Empty on Purpose
The instinct is to fill Yunnan with viewpoints. The days your children remember are the unhurried ones: a 4 km ride along Erhai Lake, an afternoon learning Bai tie-dyeing in Xizhou, a morning watching gulls at Haigeng Dam.
Plan one outdoor anchor per day and leave the rest open. A hard rule from our own routes: never stack Yulong Snow Mountain and a long lakeshore ride into the same morning.
One Hands-On Hour Beats Three Viewpoints
Nature holds a child's attention when it can be touched.
- Bai tie-dyeing in Xizhou.
- Naxi papermaking or a Dongba workshop near Baisha.
- Tea picking on the lower slopes of Cangshan.
These are also the activities that still work when the weather turns.
Rain, Roads and a Spare Morning
Yunnan's dry season runs roughly November to April; summer afternoons bring rain and slower mountain roads. Build one spare morning into any route that ends with a fixed flight.
What Wentrip Can Do
We arrange private ground services for families: a car and driver, a guide who can cut a day short, and a route built one base at a time. We cannot change the altitude or keep the gorge road dry.
Send your children's ages, your travel dates and your top two must-see places through our website. We will tell you which line actually fits.
